DETAILED PICTURE Detailed photo

Bakhtiari bag made in Iran in 1920.
The products of the Bakhtiars are among the noblest of all flatweaves. This is the most important of the Luri tribes, who are spread over large areas of the Zagros mountains. Their well-to-do khans settled in the nineteenth century in the villages of the Chahar Mahal on the slopes of the Zagros west of Isfahan. For this reason the pile carpets of the region are called Bakhtiars. But the flatweaves illustrated here are not from the Chahar Mahal but are the products of nomadic Bakhtiars from the mountains above the market town of Shushtar. Their large kilims are woven in a striking double-interlocked tapestry weave. Often they consist of two broad panels sewn together, a practice which is quite common in Anatolia but is rare in Iran.
100 x 135 cm (3 ' 3 " x 4 ' 5 "). Stock № D1266.
