Dagestan rugs are from Dagestan, an Autonomous Republic within the Russian Federation, is located on the rocky northern slopes of the Greater Caucasian Range and washed by the Caspian Sea. It is inhabited by about thirty nationalities and ethnographic groups. In this mountainous region sundry arts and crafts such as ornamental stone and woodcarving, glazed and unglazed ceramics, in addition to oriental rug weaving, are of ancient origin. To some degree they have been influenced by the arts and crafts of Transcaucasia and the Near East.
